Restaurant notes: New wine bar at 16th and South; chef demos; free rum drinks

A chef is attached to Jet Wine Bar.

  1. "September 1" is the newly expected opening of Jet Wine Bar near 16th and South Streets, as owner Jill Weber says she's been finding new surprises with every stage of construction in the century-old building at 1525 South St. (She's an archaeologist and should be used to such stuff.) And guess what? Chef Matt Zagorski, who left the Rouge/500º fold and is chef at El Camino Real in Northern Liberties, is developing Jet's menu. Meanwhile, Zagorski is working on El Camino Real's menu and is about to add chicken-fried seitan, which owner Owen Kamihira calls awesome.

  2. Jason Cichonski of Lacroix and Guillermo Pernot of Cuba Libre will square off in series of "friendly" culinary competitions Saturday and Sunday (demos at 11:30 a.m., 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.) at the Promenade at Sagemore in Marlton, part of a Cadillac product showcase. Details here .

  3. Mixto, the Latin at 1141 Pine St. in Wash West, got the OK to extend hours till 2 a.m., and it's doing so Thursdays to Saturdays. It's scheduled a late-night fiesta for July 22, including comp Cruzan rum mojitos and Sauza margaritas from 10-11 p.m. (they're $3 each till closing that night).

  4. Want to dine at the forthcoming Speck in Northern Liberties? Probably should leave your pooch at home.
