Restaurant notes: Green Eggs expanding, and so is East Passyunk

A new beer bar from a Starr alum.

To say Green Eggs Cafe is growing is an understatement. The first location, at 1306 Dickinson St. in South Philly, opened at the dawn of 2010 and collected 2 bells from The Inquirer's Craig LaBan. Since then, Green Eggs has opened a second spot, at 719 N. Second St. in Northern Liberties. This weekend, the South Philly bruncherie will open its expanded dining room, as it's taken over the store next door, next to Ipollito's Seafood. Dinner will be offered in about a month, says partner Steve Slaughter. The partners are also negotiating for a location -- perhaps for a different concept including a bar -- on East Passyunk.

And speaking of East Passyunk:

Starr/City Tap House alumnus Gordon Dinerman is preparing Birra, what he calls a cozy, "lighthearted" spot specializing in craft beers, with wines and cocktails ("but not a hundred vodkas"), on the corner of 12th and Morris Streets, next to Doggie Style (and where Doggie Style's doggie daycare used to be). It will fit 50 outside and 40 outside. Italian/Mediterranean dishes will be cooked in a brick oven. He targets May.

And speaking further of East Passyunk:

The East Passyunk Avenue Business Improvement District is gearing up for its fifth Flavors of the Avenue, in which restaurants feed about 1,000 people along a two-block stretch of EPA between Dickinson and Morris Streets. This year's edition is up for Saturday, April 30, from noon to 5 p.m. Birra will be among the restaurants exhibiting.
