Sportswriter Stephen A. Smith has left the employ of The Inquirer.
The news, reported today on Deadspin and Journal-isms, included generic statements by the paper and by Smith, who said, "I'd sincerely like to take a moment to thank the Philadelphia Inquirer for 15½ mostly wonderful years."
On Twitter, he said he was the "happiest" he's been in quite some time and added: "Now it's time for bigger and better things."
There will be no "goodbye" column in the paper.
Smith's agent, Steve Mountain, would only confirm that the departure was mutual.
Smith, who had clashed with editors over his radio and TV work, now hosts a morning show on Fox Sports Radio.
