Pub & Kitchen adding a Shore spot

The Diving Horse in Avalon will be a BYOB.

The team from Center City's Pub & Kitchen -- Jonathan Adams*, Dan Clark, and Ed Hackett -- will branch out to the Shore this summer season with a BYO in the heart of Avalon. (Keep in mind that McDonald and Hackett both cut their teeth in the BYO realm,)

The partners are blowing out the former Re/Max office with big picture windows and landscaped outdoor patio. Clark's family also will open a hardware store, Avalon Hardware, next door this summer.

Name: The Diving Horse
Address: 2109 Dune Drive, at the corner of 21st Street
Concept: Seafood-oriented farm-to-table taking advantage not only of the local fishermen but the Jersey farmers; a "casual dining environment," says Hackett.
Menu: light, fresh, fits with the Shore (Adams is working up a fried oyster dish)
Price points: $7-$13 appetizers; top menu entree $27 with some daily plates priced higher
Open for dinner only, nightly
Opening date: Around Memorial Day
Drinks: They'll keep a "dry bar" with stemware and mixers, and steer customers to nearby liquor stores and wine shops for beverage options
The look: modern farm meets old seashore nostalgia -- but no fisherman's nets and anchors, please. They're using salvaged pieces including an old church floor. Tables will be topped with white tablecloths covered with white paper. Servers will wear jeans and bistro aprons. There will be an open kitchen, where Adams will share time between Avalon and P&K at 20th and Lombard.

* The chef formerly known as Jonathan McDonald is now using Jonathan Adams, but he still answers to his nickname "Jonny Mac." Adams says he was raised by his maternal grandparents' family and, after the birth of his son two years ago, decided to change his surname to theirs.
