Pizzicato closes after 18 years

"I've given up the fight," the owner says.

After 18 years and two weeks, John Duva has closed Pizzicato, his casual Italian restaurant on the corner of Third and Market Streets in Old City.

The city had filed judgments against the business, including one for more than $297,000 in back taxes that was subject of an agreement a year ago. Meanwhile, the property's mortgage had been in foreclosure since early 2013, according to court records. A sheriff's sale is scheduled for March 1.

"I've given up the fight," said Duva, who had one of the first wood-fired pizza ovens in Old City and did a bang-up lunch trade. Duva declined to comment further.

At one point, there also were Pizzicato locations in Moorestown and Marlton. In 2013, Moorestown Mall entered a judgment for $1.26 million against the business there, according to court records.
