The Pillsbury Bake-Off finals will assemble 100 home cooks for a shot at a $1 million prize.
The 2013 World Food Championships are coming off, drawing about 400 competitors in the categories of BBQ, chili, burger, sandwich, recipe, dessert and bacon - plus a chef contest. The purse is $300,000.
Though organizers have no geographic list of the competitors, I see four locals:
Fat Jack's, which has locations in Jenkintown, Northeast Philadelphia and Ithaca, N.Y., is repping in the burger competition. Glenn Gross' company won the 2013 Philadelphia Burger Brawl with a creation that included Angus chuck brisket and ribeye, topped with BBQ sauce, cheddar-jack cheese, hickory-smoked brisket, Carolina pulled pork, sautéed onions, Kentucky slaw and Memphis dry rub, served on a buttered, toasted Le Bus onion brioche roll with a pickle on top. A&E is shooting Gross and his son, Kevin, for a series due to premiere in early 2014.
Jill Gilber, winner of the Kenmore 100 Anniversary Home Cooked Contest and owner/operator of Gilber Travel in Northeast Philadelphia, is in the running in the recipe category.
