Friday, March 3 is opening day of Otis & Pickles Speakeasy, a revamping of a South Philly shot-and-beer called Cooney's Bar, at the hands of Charlie Collazo of The Institute.
At Otis & Pickles (2500 S. Third St., at Porter), Collazo kept the bar itself while using a quirky collection of construction and everyday materials in the decor. Galvanized metal clads the wall behind the bar, kitchen colanders are used as wall sconces, and a clever assortment of pipe and fittings make up the drink tower (its six taps dispense flavored spirits as well as cocktails). Eleven craft beers are on tap.
As indicated by the name, housemade pickles are featured prominently in the menu, including pickled-brine wings, pickled pork belly tacos, and vegan marinated portabella tacos.
Besides a client base of Whitman locals, I can see it as a stop before or after a Phillies game, as it's less than 10 minutes from Citizens Bank Park. Hours are noon to 2 a.m. Monday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. weekends.
