New Honey's Sit N Eat: The nuts and bolts

POSTED: Saturday, December 22, 2012, 4:00 AM

Jeb Woody and Ellen Mogell went the kitschy route (as in old kitchens) to furnish their homey Honey's Sit N Eat, now a landmark diner/bruncherie in Northern Liberties.

Eight years later, for their second location, at 21st and South Streets, their design is more - shall we say - nuts and bolts. The couple bought some of the fixtures and inventory from the long-gone Schwemer's Hardware on Girard Avenue near Sixth Street, which enjoyed a run of a century or so from its founding in 1875.

"It's a treasure trove and a sociological study," Woody says. They've come across the store's catalogs as well as the same merchandise offered within - some of it unused. (A 1947 oven, pristine, will be a servers' station.) Since many of the items were made in Philadelphia - as you can see from the addresses included in the old catalogs - this collection carries historic importance. Old paint signs hang over the dining room.

They're looking at a January opening, and don't seem to be in any huge hurry. (Elephants don't gestate as long as this project did. I reported on it on the day it was signed: June 24, 2010 - a full 2½ years ago.)

With this location, Honey's is also branching into catering.

JoshuaFrySpeed - that's quite an overgeneralization. I enjoy brunch at Honey's. I have zero tattoos, no glasses, and work hard at a white-collar gig to support my family. I'd love to hear you describe yourself - besides self righteous, aging, bitter, and provincial..

Thought the Simpsons last week did a nice job of skewering urban hipster sub culture and it's many contradictions, especially their simultaneous embrace of modern technology and their fetish with all things old timely (which this story touches on).

Hipsters are the boogie man. Their has always been some sort of "scenester" through the ages that cranky people love to complain about. What i'm more concerned about are the "internet Trolls" and the "hecklers" that just love to complain. about everything. Eeeyore is their god.

    Welcome Honey Sit and eat.

I love Honey's although I've never had the patience to wait on the Sunday morning lines and I don't go there for the decor. I go there for the food. Every single thing I have ever ordered there is really tasty. It doesn't matter what I order, it's always really good and it's reasonably priced. I suspect that the people waiting on line are not there to be hipsters. They are anticipating great food worth waiting for and hanging out with their neighbors while they wait.

"The Hiptster ruined fishtown" lol wtf!!! are you joking?? Fishtown was a RUIN before the "hiptsters" got there...the hipsters are saving it...it will soon become too expensive for hipsters then professional couples and families will move there (fyi thats already occurring)....it was Appalachia in the middle of a city...it was a place people wanted to forget even existed..highest concentration of uneducated in-bread bigoted folks in the city similar what most of grays ferry was/is.....i'm absolutely not a hipster.... 35 year old with white collar professional job...live in a 100 year old stone colonial in the the NW section of this city.... I enjoy Honey's....so does my dad a 70 year old retired professional....

Haha. I'd love to know the emotional motives behind any "hipster" discussion, especially in the context of a restaurant opening.

What's up with these comments. You go and eat, anywhere, because you like the food. If you think it's expensive, don't go. I don't have a clue what a hipster is and do not care either. We eat a Honeys because we like the food. We're oblivious to who else may be there.

What are the chances a hipster is going to shoot you and steal your iPhone? Compared with the alternative in that area, I'll take hipsters.

I don't live in Philly so I have no clue what a "hipster" is but I am curious to know why people can't just be themselves without being labeled in Philly.
