Today: Free doughnuts and other baked goods

Free at Krispy Kreme, almost free at Dunkin Donuts.

Friday, June 5 is National Donut Day, and Philadelphia-area carb-providers will be celebrating.

They're free, one per customer, at Krispy Kreme's local locations at 114 N DuPont Highway, New Castle Del.; Manoa Shopping Center on West Chester Pike in Havertown; 1170 Haddon Ave. (Cuthbert Blvd. and Haddon Ave.) Collingswood; and 1729 Street Road, Bensalem

Dunkin' Donuts' locations will give out a donut - only with a beverage purchase.

How about Jiffy Lube locations in Philadelphia? No, they don't actually make doughnuts. They will offer comp tire air-pressure checks so you don't have to use your spare tire ("doughnut" - get it?). Additionally, Jiffy Lube will hand out comp doughnuts to customers throughout the day.

You can get a free cupcake - not a donut - at the new Tiffany's Bakery shop at the Gallery (near Jefferson Station) starting at 9 a.m. Friday, June 5. One thousand cupcakes will be given away.

In other sweet news:

  2. Federal Donuts is bringing back - for one day only at its stores - its cookies-and-cream fancy variety ($2.50 each/$20 a dozen).

  3. Speaking of FedNuts, Foursquare ranks its original location at Second and Manton Streets in South Philadelphia at No. 19 on its list of the top 20-rated donut shops in America. It's here.

  4. Need to find doughnuts - not necessarily free ones? There's an app for that (the Doughbot).

  5. Local travel writers Larissa and Michael Milne round up what they call the best donut shops in America, and they've helpfully included Frangelli's Bakery in South Philadelphia. List is on Huffington Post here.
