Must-visit gastropubs in Philly area

POSTED: Wednesday, November 21, 2012, 2:34 PM
The bar and 70-seat dining area of Barbuzzo, its look urban farmhouse, its vibe lively and noisy, and its flavors appealingly rustic and seasonal. (DAVID M WARREN / Staff Photographer)

Zagat.com is out with a list of the 10 gastropubs in the Philly area deemed "must visits."

This round-up of "drink-happy eateries" was produced by Zagat.com's Danya Henninger and was culled from the 2013 Zagat Survey, which I edited based on surveyors' comments.

No. 5 - for example - was Pub & Kitchen, whose Zagat review goes like this:

“Awesome” burgers headline the menu of “novel, fresh” Euro-American pub fare at this Southwest Center City hot spot; a “lively late-20s early-30s scene” takes up the “farmhouse"-like space most nights, and while some complain the servers can be “a little snarky”, most consider them “top-talent” who “remember your name and your drink.”

See the round-up here.

Kept clicking through thinking, "Royal better be on here."

    No. 2! Well done, Zagat.

Love my neighborhood "gastropub" ... but God, I hate that word.

Why can't more local pubs find this recipe for success. Good food and drink is it that hard to figure out?

How did Devil's Den make the list? It must have improved immensley since my last visit. Admittedly, that was a few years back. Kudos to them for such an improvement!

Can't believe Prohibition isn't on there. Definitely would be in my top 5.

Yuppies? Cue the dated term and address your anger with a therapist. I will gladly pay a little more for beer and food if it means not just burgers w/fries and more importantly, not having to deal with drunken morons.

    How about in West Chester?

what about West Chester, you think Sidebar or Ram's Head could compete with anything in Philly? Anything? College kids...enough said.

The Royal Tavern? Maybe right after they opened, but they've been awful the past few years.

Pub & Kitchen has always been our go-to-place for a hamburger, plus the atmosphere and people are great. The Churchill Burger was one of the best in the city. It has been replaced with "The Burger," which doesn't hold a candle to the CB. It's dry, flavorless (miss that bone marrow), and covered over with bacon, pickled onions and blue cheese. My wife and I gave it a second chance and walked away. The CB blend stood on its own; no need for all the toppings. That, coupled with the boring one-dessert selection, we unfortunately won't be going back.

How boring. "Gastropub" is a euphemism for "pretentious yuppie bar with overpriced food and beer." Bring back the Tritone!
