Mugshots closes Girard Ave. location

Mugshots on Girard Avenue, at its November 2010 debut.

Angela Vendetti cites slow business and poor prospects for growth for her decision to close the Brewerytown location of her Mugshots coffeehouse.

Although that stretch of West Girard now is showing signs of life - witness the recent openings of Rybrew and Shifty's Taco - Vendetti said, "That isn't enough. It's just not working."

Mugshots got help at the outset from a $50,000 Restore Retail Incentive grant, which helped with equipment and constuction at 2831 W. Girard Ave. Vendetti said that location had "three years of breaking even."

"I live up here," she said. "I would have loved for this to work, but it's taking too long."

Mugshots started nine years ago at 2100 Fairmount Ave. across from Eastern State Penitentiary - now the OCF Coffeehouse - but recently moved to 1925 Fairmount Ave. It previously had satellites in Manayunk and at Temple U. Vendetti said she was expanding her office catering.

Weep not for Brewerytown. It is remaining caffeinated. Entrepreneur Toyin Ajayi-Frankel opened The Lucky Goat just last week at 888 N. 26th St. (26th and Poplar).
