Mount Airy's Avenida is lightening up

Plan is to shed the tablecloths and lighten up the whole shebang - decor, menu, drinks, pricing - and rebrand it as Cantina Avenida on Tuesday, May 27. That is just in time to hit the summer season, as its backyard patio is a gem.

After 4½ years, Kim and Edgar Alvarez have closed Avenida, their Mount Airy Latin bar-restaurant (7402 Germantown Ave.).

Plan (announced Wednesday by press release) is to shed the tablecloths and lighten up the whole shebang - decor, menu, drinks, pricing - and rebrand it as Cantina Avenida on Tuesday, May 27.

The move will hit the summer season, as Avenida's backyard patio is a gem.

Edgar Alvarez's new, made-from-scratch menu (top price $15) will include small plates and tacos; crab nachos, crispy tortillas topped with crab meat, jalapeños, cilantro, Chihuahua cheese and crema; mole fries, with fried yucca, Old Bay, veggie chorizo and Chihuahua cheese; and a Sonora bacon-wrapped hot dog with avocado salsa and queso fresco.

Main dining room will lose the earth tones in favor of a bright, airy color scheme.
