Mercer Cafe opening at Navy Yard with Tacconelli's Pizza

Day 1 will be Wednesday, May 6.

If the buzz from Navy Yard workers is any indication, there will be lines Wednesday, May 6 at the opening of the Mercer Cafe at 15th Street and Kitty Hawk Avenue, next to DiNic's.

It's a partnership between the Port RIchmond corner luncheonette and Tacconelli's Pizza - so facilitated by the fact that they share family ties.

The restaurant will be open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The cafe will have special hours on Sunday, May 3, for the Broad Street Run.

In this new location, Mercer Café will offer a breakfast and lunch menu, La Colombe coffee, a grab-and-go market, lunch delivery, and corporate catering.

They've set up brick ovens.

James Beard-nominated architect Joshua Otto of Otto Architects turned the one-story building - which old salts will know as Building 623 - from a former bank to include open seating and a diner counter. During  warm weather, outdoor seating will be offered.

Mercer Cafe complements Lo Spiedo, which Marc Vetri and his crew opened last year at the Navy Yard's main gate.

The project also is a homecoming for co-owner Tom Woltjen Sr., who started in 1980 as a sheet metal mechanic at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. In 1998, he and his brother Robert converted a rowhouse at Westmoreland and Mercer Streets into Mercer Cafe. His wife, Dina, is a Tacconelli. (This is the branch of the Tacconelli family that operates the pizzeria in Maple Shade.)
