John's Roast Pork expanding

POSTED: Friday, March 1, 2013, 9:47 AM
Customers line up to place their orders at John's Roast Pork at 14 E. Snyder Ave in Philadelphia. John Bucci Jr. (dark hair) takes an order. (Laurence Kesterson / Inquirer)

John's Roast Pork stinks.

And by stinks, I mean the hours. Certainly not the food, whose cheesesteaks and roast pork are some of the city's most honored.

John Bucci, having beaten cancer, simply cannot work the godawful days that others in the business do, and John's is a small, mom-and-son operation anyway.

The Pennsport pied piper of pork tells me that he has struck an arrangement with one of his oldest customers, the Adams family, which owns Mick Daniel's Saloon at Second Street and Snyder Avenue, two blocks away.

Starting March 17, you'll be able to get John's Roast Pork's pork, meatballs, hot Italian sausage, and veal scallopine there after John's closes for the day.

That's great news for McDaniels. Micky was a high school classmate and a great guy. Good for him and his business.

Thanks for those deep thoughts Slim. Same suppliers, same recipes and probably some of the same people working at the new location which is all of 2 blocks away, and your simple-minded conclusion is the Bucci family is selling out and destroying their great brand? Thanks for playing, genius.

If John and Mom wanted to sell out (like Tony Luke Jr. and his frozen cheesesteaks) they would have had many opportunities to do so. Glad John is back at the grill and looking forward to trying my JRP's with a nice local draft at Mick's.

I would argue that they are not an institution like other places, even though they do have superior food, because people with jobs that don't require moving around --- can't get there -- ever. I've had 'the best' discussion with so many people, and hardly anyone has been to John's. The reason? The hours.

Great move for both parties. John's is great and the Adams Family are great people.I remember Micky from Neumann, although he wa 2 years ahead of me and his brother Kenny was my Freshman year Gym teacher at Neumann.

@black dog you are definitely wrong. I still go into a meat coma after their cheesesteak. It's the best.

@SlimFox you'll never make it in this world with that attitude

This is a great move, I plan on visiting Mick's.

got Dinic's a few weeks ago and I thought it was garbage. JRP's pork is solid but their cheesesteaks are amazing. Still a Steve's kinda guy but when it comes to chopped meat, JRP american or sharp prov w/ on the sesame bun is king

If the steak isn't shredded/chopped its just roast beef on a roll. I would love to try Johns and wish they were able to stay open later.

I think Tony Luke's does a better roast pork and John's does a better cheesesteak.
