Inside the new City Diner at Broad and South

But the operators of South Philadelphia’s Penrose Diner are about a week from opening City Diner on the ground floor of SouthStar Lofts on the northwest corner of Broad and South Streets, the former Juniper Commons.

One by one, the Center City diner scene has been losing the battle of attrition.

But the operators of South Philadelphia's Penrose Diner have just opened City Diner on the ground floor of SouthStar Lofts, on the northeast corner of Broad and South Streets, the former Juniper Commons.

Dimitrios Kolovos and Manwell Baroody, young guys who grew up in the biz, are working with restaurant veteran Peter Mooradian (Chima, Oceanaire Seafood Room, Serafina, Four Seasons).

City Diner offers a full all-day/all-night breakfast menu with such dishes as Belgian waffles topped with butter and maple syrup, a three-egg tomato and Swiss omelet with bacon on the side, and an Italian sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich to take out.

Lunch and dinner specials include such diner staples as a house-sliced Reuben sandwich, spaghetti and meatballs, gnocchi, and meat loaf.

The full cocktail bar and lounge is open for happy hour and late-night.

Hours are 6 a.m. to midnight Monday to Thursday, and 24 hours on weekends (6 a.m. Friday to midnight Sunday).
