Inside the Goat's Beard

POSTED: Wednesday, April 3, 2013, 11:58 AM

Open about a week in Manayunk: The Goat's Beard (4201 Main St., 267-323-2495), a rustic whiskey bar with bold American cooking, served in small plates. The location was Main Street Bar & Grill and for many years was Thomas'.

Major work opened up the first floor. On the second floor, a wooden-slat wall embedded with plants adds an interesting touch to what could have been a bare, high-ceilinged room.

Owner Sean Coyle, who founded Bourbon Blue, insists that The Goat's Beard is not named after a barnyard animal but the native Pennsylvania plant (Aruncus). However, goats abound in the furnishings.

Eight beers on tap, 18 in bottles, 6 whites/4 reds by the glass, $8.50 specialty cocktails.

Chef Dan Connelly, a former owner of Northern Liberties' Copper Bistro, obtains as much of the American menu from local sources as possible. Figure on three small plates per couple; they're $11.50 to $17 each.

Menu is here.

I want to fist-fight the clown that came up with this "try hard" name.
