Han Dynasty's owner is out standing in his field

Han Dynasty's Han Chiang, now back in the area after moving to New York City, is pulling a Green Acres.

He and his mother, Lung Lung Chiang, are working a greenhouse and small plot of land near their homestead in Parkesburg, Chester County.

Eat bok choy or string beans at Han Dynasty recently? It's from the farm, along with scallions, pea leaves, cucumbers, bitter melon, basil and the like. Everything is grown without pesticides, he says.

The restaurant-farm thing is reminiscent of Jose Garces, whose Bucks County farm supplies his Philly-area restaurants.

"Farmer" Han says he and his family lived on the property, which includes a flower shop, when they arrived in the States 23 years ago. It had been empty for 15 years before they decided to put it to use supplying the restaurants. Next year, he said he plans to grow hops for Victory Brewing down the road.

Han named the greenhouse "Double Dragon," after his mother, whose name translates that way.

"It's one of her passions," he said of gardening. "It brings emotions when I go back. It makes me realize how much she's done for me, and how I'm nothing without her."

"I worked for my mom in the flower shop and farm before I started the restaurants," he said. "I'm the only straight guy I know who can cook and make flower arrangements."
