Gennaro's closing South Philly pizzeria as it moves into Parx

Owner Mike Giammarino says the closing is related to his deal with Parx Casino in Bensalem, announced early this month.

July 30 will be the finale for Gennaro's Tomato Pie, the pizzeria across from the East Passyunk's Singing Fountain at 1533 S. 11th St.

Owner Mike Giammarino says the closing is related to his deal with Parx Casino in Bensalem, announced early this month.

Giammarino will move equipment to the casino as he aims to open by the end of the year.

Gennaro's hit the scene in 2012, occupying a corner at 1429 Jackson St., near South Philadelphia High. In early 2015, Giammarino opened Grace & Pat's, an offshoot, at 1533 S. 11th St. He rebranded the location as Gennaro's in late 2015 and closed Jackson Street.

Giammarino owns the oldest pizzeria in America: Lombardi's in Manhattan. He operated a branch of Lombardi's when it was on 18th Street south of Sansom in Rittenhouse, which was bulldozed a decade ago to make way for 10 Rittenhouse.
