Free and local cheesesteaks up for grabs

Sure, the sandwich is a Philly invention. But this giveaway will tout ingredients close to home.

Cheesesteaks may be a uniquely Philadelphia creation, but not all the ingredients that go into them. (You may have heard of the South Philly shop that uses South American beef, for example.)

Hope you're hungry Wednesday. As part of a promo for the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corp's Philly Homegrown campaign, Frog Commissary founder Steve Poses will prepare and serve cheesesteaks -- all made entirely from ingredients grown and produced within the area's 100-mile foodshed -- at the mayor's farmers's market at LOVE Park, 15th Street at JFK Boulevard.

Serving time is 11 a.m. Wednesday (Aug. 25). Poses will make 250 cheesesteaks and cut them into quarters. Think he'll get 1,000 people?

The featured cheesesteak, made with Poses' sweet and hot pepper mix, will also be sold for a limited time (Aug. 26-29) at Ben's Bistro in the Franklin Institute, which is open to the public without admission fee.
