It occurred to Rebecca Foxman and Ezekial Ferguson, who became fast friends over goat cheese specialties while managing the Valley Shepherd Creamery & Meltkraft Grilled Cheese stall at Reading Terminal Market.
They set out on their own nearby with an idea of their own called Fox & Son Fancy Corndogs.
The stand - whose made-to-order menu features topped or plain corn dogs (pork and beef, vegan, kosher, and turkey), fries and poutine, funnel cake, stuffed potatoes, and cheese curds from Birchrun Hills Farm - opened last week in a part of the former Reading Terminal home of Salumeria.
Fox & Son got an early boost from GlutenFreePhilly, which observed that the entire menu - even the funnel cake - naturally passes muster. The shop serves fountain drinks from Tractor Soda Co., which bills its syrups as organic and non-GMO.
The name is a portmanteau of their last names, and they spell corndog as one word to reflect Philly's traditional spelling of cheesesteak.
Foxman, a Culinary Institute of America alumna, and Ferguson, who before Valley Shepherd worked for DiBruno Bros. for 13 years, are joined in the venture by Foxman classmate Kevin Kwan, an Atlanta-based hospitality vet.
