Your Philly fall restaurant preview — annotated

About three dozen restaurant projects are in various stages of doneness as they aim to open by the end of the year.

Grab your mouse, and hit this web-annotated version of my fall restaurant round-up that appears in Thursday's Inquirer Food section.

You'll notice very few BYOBs. Quite simply, when profit margins are as thin as they are, a restaurateur needs every dime from alcohol sales to turn a profit. There's a lot of money in craft beer. More restaurateurs are biting down hard and going for the license.

You'll also see a cryptic note in here: the "TBA" location of Il Pittore, the Stephen Starr-owned Italian restaurant featuring chef Chris Painter. I'm hearing rumblings that although this project is still on track for November, it will not open in the former Ansill at Third and Bainbridge Streets in Queen Village. There's another location in the mix, and it's a beaut. (Gotta wait till the lease is signed, though -- there's enough unfounded speculation out there about various projects.)

Keep in mind that I'm quoting the (often wildly optimistic) owners on the opening dates:

Hop Angel Brauhaus. Mike "Scoats" Scotese and Patrick McGinley of the Northeast's Grey Lodge Pub do a German beer bar, with food from chef Matt Hartnett, at the Blue Ox Brauhaus in Fox Chase; 7980 Oxford Ave., next week.

Green Eggs Cafe. The South Philly breakfast-bruncherie hits Northern Liberties; 719 N. Second St., mid-September.

Alfredo. Alfredo Giannaccari (Newtown Grill) offers a midpriced Italian BYOB in the former Berwyn location of Trattoria San Nicola; 668 Lancaster Ave., Sept. 15.

Jet Wine Bar. A cozy small-plater with a global wine selection; 1525 South St., mid-September.

Speck. Chef Shola Olunloyo will serve ambitious New American cuisine, with prix-fixe options similar to his StudioKitchen private dinners, in the Piazza at Schmidt's in Northern Liberties; 1050 N. Hancock St., mid- to late September.

The Khyber. Only it won't be called the Khyber. The Old City landmark is being revived as a casual, to-be-named Japanese bar (izakaya), with a small-plate menu, under chef Todd Dae Kulper (ex-Ro-Zu); 56 S. Second St., Sept. 28.

The Bottle Shop. Two women, lots of craft beers, assorted snacks in a South Philly storefront; 1837 E. Passyunk Ave., late September.

943. Argentina meets Italy in South Philly, in a BYOB from Pascual Cancelliere (ex-M Restaurant); 943 S. Ninth St., late September.

Biba. Tria, the wine-cheese-beer bars, gets a smaller "cousin" in University City; 3131 Walnut St., late September.

White Dog Cafe. The University City landmark is up to new tricks with a Main Line branch; 200 W. Lancaster Ave., Wayne, late September.

Baby Blues BBQ. University City gets a branch of a California-based barbecue/lounge; 3402 Sansom St., late September.

Down Home Diner. It's coming back after a full renovation (and there's a liquor license in the future), at Reading Terminal Market; 12th and Filbert Streets, late September.

Chef Salvatore's. Chef Salvatore De Cristofaro, whose past includes Pavio's in the Northeast, Pinocchio in Center City, and the Sands and Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, does "simple, fresh, affordable" Italian fare at the former Blue Horse in Blue Bell; 602 Skippack Pike, Blue Bell, Oct. 1.

Fathom. Fish's Mike Stollenwerk swims onto a Fishtown corner, within shouting distance of Johnny Brenda's, with a seafood-based taphouse; 200 E. Girard Ave., early October.

Village Belle. Cozy, neighborhood-oriented American-Mediterranean at the former Frederick's in Queen Village from Louis Campanaro, former chef of Cherry Hill's Olive and a longtime kitchen pardner of Blackfish's Chip Roman; 757 S. Front St., early October.

Liberté. A contemporary restaurant, with fireplace, in the lobby lounge of the Sofitel; 120 S. 17th St., October.

JG Domestic. Jose Garces presents "American everything" at this bistro in the Cira Centre in University City; 2929 Arch St., October.

Sticks & Stones. The long-delayed pub from ex-Felicia's owner Nick Miglino in South Philly; 1909 E. Passyunk Ave., October.

Winthorpe & Valentine. The Westin Hotel at Liberty Place spiffs up and rebrands its American restaurant, using the names of the two conniving characters from the movie Trading Places; 99 S. 17th St., October.

Dublin Square. A Burlington County Irish pub takes over the Swanky Bubbles in Cherry Hill; 482 E. Evesham Rd., Cherry Hill, October.

1518 Bar & Grill. An American restaurant-bar sets up on one of Center City's new restaurant rows; 1518 Sansom St., October.

Matador. A Spanish-Mexican themer will replace the Freehouse in downtown Wayne; 110 N. Wayne Ave., Wayne, October.

Famous Dave's. The barbecue chain hits Center City (liquor-licensed); 1725 Chestnut St., October.

American Sardine Bar. The crew from South Philly Tap Room intends to go "local local local" (food, beer, atmospher) at the former Wander Inn in Point Breeze, says owner John Longacre (the name happens to be the corporate name of Longacre's South Philly Tap Room); 1800 Federal St., late October.

Xilantro. A refined sibling of the suburban favorites Los Serapes and El Serape comes to the Main Line; 103 N. Wayne Ave., Wayne, late October.

Blue Bear Tavern. Vesper Hospitality Investments is gutting the interior of Doc Watson's and turning it into a contemporary pub; 216 S. 11th St., late October-early November.

Marabella Meatball Company. Gabe Marabella is on a roll with a casual concept; 1211 Walnut St., late October.

Opa. A modern Greek restaurant/bar will join Time, Bar, and Zavino on a Washington Square West block; 1311 Sansom St., early November.

Il Pittore. Italian from chef Chris Painter, backed by Stephen Starr; location TBA, November. 

Gino's Burgers & Chicken. The fast-food giant will revive on Route 202; 611 W. DeKalb Pike, King of Prussia; late November.

Cantina Feliz. Outgoing Distrito chef Tim Spinner ventures into Montco with Mexican comestibles in a stylish setting; 424 S. Bethlehem Pike, Fort Washington, Dec. 1.

Jolly's Crab House. Jolly Weldon of Jolly's Dueling Piano Bar goes Maryland-style with Italian specialties in deep South Philly; 2650 S. 15th St., December.

Unnamed Indian restaurant from Tiffin; 777 S. Broad St., December.

Looking ahead:

Frohmans Wursthaus. Jose Garces' beer-and-brats joint in the former Letto Deli; 208 S. 13th St., winter.

Revolution House. American diner (breakfast-lunch-dinner) in Old City from Luca Sena of Ristorante Panorama; 200 Market St., winter.

Stephen Starr's unnamed pub. Starr has hired English chef Robert Aikens. 18th and Sansom Streets, winter. (Starr says "spring" for his biergarten in Fishtown.)

Serafina. The New York-based Italian celeb magnet comes to 10 Rittenhouse; 18th and Sansom Streets, January.
