El Camino Real to open in Manayunk

The Northern Liberties Tex/Mex will set up inside the former longtime home of Hikaru, which Takashi "Stash" Yoshida closed last July after 21 years.

Lots of movement at El Camino Real, Owen Kamihira's Tex-Mex in Liberties Walk in Northern Liberties.

One, he is expanding the joint, adding a small bar, more seating, and blessedly more restrooms by taking over the space next door that previously housed a sex-toy boutique. (Perhaps Kamihira will add some Kinky Friedman to the playlist in tribute.)

The work awaits some zoning clearances but should be ready this summer.

The bigger news is El Camino Real's expansion to Main Street in Manayunk, where it is setting up inside the former longtime home of Hikaru, which Takashi "Stash" Yoshida closed last July after 21 years.

Kamihira says the two-level Manayunk digs (4348 Main St.) - to have what he calls "an almost saloon/cantina vibe" - will put more emphasis on the Texas BBQ/comfort food side of the menu. He envisions a large brunch trade and solid neighborhood appeal.

Opening is penciled in for fall.
