Don Polec to leave Action News

POSTED: Friday, March 13, 2009, 11:49 AM

Don Polec, who's been doing goofy features for Action News since his arrival from Buffalo in November 1982, is on his way out, effective April 1.

A station source said he was headed off in a different direction and is looking to do reports with his wife's TV production company. Channel 6 may even air some of them.

"Long before Seinfeld, he was the guy who could take absolutely nothing and make it hilarious," said former colleague Marc Howard.

For your edification, here's a great Gail Shister story on Polec from 1984.

He should've gone years ago. His stories are boring. Chanel 6 isn't that great anyway, many times they get the facts incorrect, and the only thing good about them is Erin O'Hearn.

Funny, I guess he became expendable when the overall news cast started to ape what he was doing. His segments were actually pretty inventive and funny. His work was a nice break from the non-stop..."fire in Kensington... murder in Strawberry Mansion"...rat-at-tat-tat of the news here.

I always heard he was un-fire-able because of family connections. I guess those connections evaporated. either way, he had a good run and an easy living. Maybe he can be the next Captain Kangaroo

I wonder if the last straw was a story last week in which he closed while standing in front of a vehicle with an expletive containing bumper sticker. Said sticker was easily read thanks to Hi Def. WPVI is very conservative and I was shocked they didn't notice.

I never understood why this great news program had this horrible guy on their broadcast, doing not-funny segments.

Now I see why people call us Negadelphians. Here is a guy who made people laugh with silly local stories that brought a little enjoyment into our bleak news. All you bashers who can find a political rant about this story are a bunch of a holes and wish you had the job Polec had all these years. Good luck Don...geez, how hard was that?

He shined the light on little corners of Philadelphia and made it interesting. With the internet and the lack of journalism done anymore by these stations all the stories are the same. It was nice to watch someone passionate and interesting report on stuff even if its not considered "hard news". I would actually tune in at the end of action news on Sundays at 11 and Wednesdays at 6 to watch him. I hope all the people who don't "get him" enjoy your extra 5 minutes of weather or extra Erin O'Hearn story about facebook three years too late.
