Don Polec to leave Action News

POSTED: Friday, March 13, 2009, 11:49 AM

Don Polec, who's been doing goofy features for Action News since his arrival from Buffalo in November 1982, is on his way out, effective April 1.

A station source said he was headed off in a different direction and is looking to do reports with his wife's TV production company. Channel 6 may even air some of them.

"Long before Seinfeld, he was the guy who could take absolutely nothing and make it hilarious," said former colleague Marc Howard.

For your edification, here's a great Gail Shister story on Polec from 1984.

I always disliked his segments. The kind of humor he has worked in the "feel good mid-90s" but not in today with the likes of Jon Stewart.

He had a long run doing stories about nothing. A great gig if you can get it. Good Luck to Don

If you saw what this guy was being paid to do those one or two little quirky segments a week, you would understand why his contract wasnt renewed in this economic environment...

The bigger question is whether the mustache's contract was renewed with WPVI or if it leaves with Polec. I can see it acting as a stand in for Jim Gardner's stache when it takes a personal day.

I have to take a contrary view. Don Polec obviously was not reporting on hard news, but I never watched one of his intelligent, well produced segments without learning something that not only was interesting, but I never would have learned on my own had he not brought it to my attention. Certainly as valuable if not more valuable than the "four shootings three fires" that qualifies as "hard news" that all the local news shows are reporting. I will greatly miss watching him.

I enjoyed his segments on the news, they were original and fun to watch. They should have had him on more. Oh well, one less reason to watch action news.

Dear Don, hate to see you go. You were better than vital coverage of Brittany, Terry Schiavo, Octomom, car wrecks in Malaysia, skiing avalanche rescue stories from the alps or a fire any where in the world on a night when the Delaware Valley could not provide a bloody, bleeding mess for our informed citizenry. You will, if in fact you do leave, be missed. I hope you made a ton of money, more than the whiners who complain about who gets paid what while Republicans did little more than loot trillions of dollars for a needless war, looted more for failed banks and continue to point the finger at middle class homeowners who only want to stay in their homes despite the ruinous speculation that was caused by the hedge fund crowd and their enablers on wall street. Oh yea,Don Polec budget buster, you sir are the problem? I think not.

I guess 6ABC is becoming like Fox29 and trying to get rid of the good stuff.

Yes, even if he reported on unimportant or relatively unimportant info, he did a good job, and was very entertaining. Most people couldn't pull of what he did.
