There's always a story when it comes to South Philly.

Take the former longtime home of Shank's & Evelyn's on 10th Street near Carpenter. After a renovation and short spell as Carluccio's, the homespun dining room is now in the hands of veteran chef John Torres, whose day job is chef at the nearby Villa di Roma.

At Predella (932 S. 10th St., 215-923-2323), which opened a couple of months ago, Torres is cooking from his past, including South Philly's La Serena, Eladio's and Cent'Anni, alongside his father, Benny, himself a longtime chef. 

Predella is open for breakfast and lunch from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday. A few weeks ago, dinner was added on Saturday (4:30 to 11 p.m.) and Sunday (3 to 9 p.m.).

Specialties include pasta e fagioli and escarole soup, as well as fish such as branzino and dorado.
