The old Chug A Mug Pub at Albert and Tulip Streets in Kensington will get new life starting Thursday, Nov. 7 when Laura Viegas opens Cook and Shaker (2301 E. Albert St., 215-426-2665).

Viegas, a 15-year veteran of the biz (White Dog Cafe, Farmicia, Bistro 7, as well as baking consultant), installed a bar made of reclaimed wood and exposed the brick walls in her 55-seater, whose menu runs from 3 p.m. to midnight on weekdays and beginning at noon on weekends.

Everything is priced at $15 and under, and the plan is to source locally, including Greensgrow and Green Meadow Farms. Viegas also has a reach-in fridge, rather than a walk-in.

Among menu items: Meatloaf Sandwich with sweet pickles, pickled red onions, cheddar mashed potatoes and BBQ glaze; Spicy Italian Sausage with broccoli rabe and braised white beans with garlic; Eggplant Rollatini with herb ricotta, slow-cooked tomato sauce and sautéed greens; Buffalo Fried Brussels Sprouts with house-made bleu cheese dressing; Tuscan Polenta Fries with roasted tomato dipping sauce; and Veggie Sandwich with mashed chickpeas, carrots, roasted peppers, breaded eggplant and sundried tomato pesto on a baguette. Homemade desserts will include Pumpkin Doughnuts.

Eight taps will dispense beers from area breweries and one cider. Six to eight cocktails will be prepared with fresh juices.

Adding to the laid-back airs will be a juke box and karaoke machine.
