Deke's BBQ in Manayunk closing; Saxbys-for-HubBub coffee swap in Center City

HubBub is refocusing its business, while Saxbys goes for brick and mortar.

Deke's Bar-B-Que's six-year run in a garage setting on Shurs Lane in Manayunk will end after Saturday, May 13. The property is going residential. Deke's takeout and catering operation will remain at 4901 Ridge Ave., near Kelly Drive, and management is promising a new location.

Friday, May 12 is the last day at 1717 Arch St. (Three Logan Square) for HubBub Coffee. Saxbys will move in, opening about three weeks later. "We weren't actively trying to sell," says HubBub's Drew Crockett, "but we got approached and the opportunity allows us to become laser-focused on roasting and cold brew." HubBub has two locations - its flagship in University City and an outpost in Radnor. More retail locations are possible down the road, Crockett says.

And speaking of more retail, Saxbys is on a roll. Besides Three Logan, it's opening this summer at 18th and Chestnut Streets, as well as student-run locations at Temple U's Fox School of Business, Drexel (33rd and Chestnut Streets), and the University of New Hampshire. CEO Nick Bayer says Saxbys' strategy is to engage both its management hires and customer base while they're young.
