Carluccio's opened last Saturday night in the former Shank's & Evelyn's space at 932 S. 10th St. (215-574-5000), a couple of months behind schedule.

It's a 26-seat Italian BYOB. In his restaurant solo debut and inspired by his family's hometown of Bagnoli Irpino, Carlo Nigro is popping out homespun, Italy-meets-South Philly food in a cozy but spare room. It's open for lunch and dinner Tuesdays through Sundays.

Shank's nostalgists can get their tripe sandwich ($7.50), though it's not the same. Nigro's version is augmented by smoked pancetta. And there's a chicken parm sandwich and sausage-and-peppers.

Nigro has set up a deli-style meat slicer in the dining room -- a station for antipasti. He pickles his own eggplant, and uses finocchiona (fennel-flavored salami) and bresaola (an air-cured beef) on his antipasto.

Most entrees run $15 to $24, though specials (lamb, etc.) are priced higher.

Here's the menu.

The food here is unbelievable! I think it has now become the best kept secret in South Philadelphia and needs to be known! It is a nice, cozy, restaurant from the outside but inside the juices and the flavor the food is pouring forth! The food is made fresh daily and the menu changes constantly. I have not had the same thing twice since I have been there - the specials are truly beyond special and the service of not just the waitstaff but of the chef, Carlo, is exceptional. His attention to detail in his masterpiece creations as well as his attention to the customer is outstanding. He personally comes up to you and introduces himself, which gives his restaurant that certain element that is often missing from others. I would definitely recommend this place beyond all others. It has that home feeling - that "I'm not just eating dinner with the people I came with but my family."
