"Boss Jock" George Michael dies
Michael Klein, Philly.com
The Washington Post today reports the death of George Michael, who was a popular WFIL "Boss Jock" during its heyday (1966-74) and went on to become a popular sportscaster in Washington, D.C., with "The George Michael Sports Machine."
"King George," who had a two-year battle with cancer, was 70.
Funeral services will be in the D.C. area sometime in January.
Here's background from the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia.

leftistqueen WOW you are good! I remember listening to the "Boss Jocks" on my transistor radio with the ear plugs like it was an Ipod back in the day walking to Woolworths on Saturday with my babysitting money so I could buy the latest 45's . Grabbing the WFIL countdown list on the way out the store. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. vrb1955

Simple if you had nothing good to say - then keep your mouth shut FLJERRY
Worked with this guy at WRC-TV in DC. Sorry to speak ill of the dead, but this guy was a pompous jerk, yelled at people constantly and belittled producers in front of everyone. Also his show was awful. simplejack

At first, WIBG was the only game in town. Then came WFIL with George Michael & Co., which, while still solidly AM in its sensibilities, was still a bit hipper and younger. But not long after, there was FM, which was a different game altogether. George Michael and his pretty bad moptop haircut got left behind. Still he and the station had a huge impact on mid-'60s music in this town. Montco PA Dem
excellent sportscaster....his use of highlights had to be the inspiration for Sports Center. PaulDeon

Man what a sham, I was a huge WHAM fan. ChunkyLover53
This is a stunner for me. I grew up with George Michael on WFIL when he would cheer all the high schools in the area. I still mourn the loss of Diamond Jim Nettleton from just a couple months ago. He had a great voice and a way of making you feel like he was talking to you. I am really sorry to hear this. sirnelson
