The owner cites health. Court records add another dimension.

Bonte Wafflerie is done

Bonte Wafflerie has shuttered its last location, at 922 Walnut St.

The Belgian-inspired mini-chain - founded in 2003 by entrepreneur Brad Messinger, who later sold it - once also had spots on Walnut Street near Juniper, on 17th Street near Sansom, and on Temple's campus.

Owner Kayur Popat cited his ill health for the closing, as well as that of Jalsa, his short-lived Old City Indian restaurant.

A peek at Philadelphia court records discloses that Bonte's landlord at 922 Walnut St. filed suit in late May, seeking $9,300 in bank rent. A court hearing is scheduled for June 19.
