Thursday (8/26) marks the Philadelphia debut of Bar AIDS, similar to Dining Out for Life in that a dozen coffeehouses and bars will donate a portion of the day's proceeds to ActionAIDS, the AIDS Law Project of Pennsylvania, Mazzoni Center and Philadelphia FIGHT.

Bar AIDS started five years ago in Chicago. Organizers point out that Pennsylvania ranks sixth in the nation in the number of people reported to be infected with the disease. As recently as 2008, new HIV infections in Philadelphia were occurring at a rate more than five times the national average – more per capita than New York City.

Participants:

  • Café Cret
  • Small Oven Bakery at Tutti Frutti
  • Bike Stop
  • City Tap House
  • Fergie's Pub
  • Knock Restaurant & Bar
  • Tabu

Dining Out For Life is always on a weeknight and it's always huge. They choose normally slow nights and it's a win-win: people come out to the restaurants in droves on a night they would have normally been dead and they raise lots of money for a good cause.

This would have been great if it had been posted a little sooner. I would definitely have come out to support it, but instead I didn't see it til today, and I'm too late.

Great. One of the main ways HIV is transmitted among gay men (3/4 of participating venues are gay bars) is when men are drunk or high and have unsafe sex. Nice to know the AIDS service organizations are encouraging more drinking.

The event was held on a Thursday as the choice of the bars and restaurants who want to bring people in on their slower nights. I hope everyone becomes a fan of BarAIDS on Facebook so you'll get early notice of the event next year!
