Tyler Akin, a sous chef at Society Hill's Zahav, just got city zoning approval for his pho-centric BYOB, Stock, which he's outfitting for an early 2014 opening at 308 E. Girard Ave. in Fishtown.
But first, he'll show off some of the menu Monday, Dec. 23 for seatings at 6 and 9 p.m. when he gets behind the stove at Zahav for its annual event “A Very Jewish Christmas.”
Hosted by his boss, Zahav chef/co-owner Michael Solomonov, the $55-a-head feast will have four courses: Salad, Mezze, Entrée and Dessert.
Featured salads include: Pickled Mustard Greens; Maitake Mushrooms with charred ginger and onion; Fermented Cabbage; Jasmine Rice; and Pomelo Fruit with mint, shallot and cilantro. Mezze: Traditional Pho, with beef, sawtooth, Thai basil and rice noodle; Rice Cakes, with daikon, preserved turnip, Shiitake mushrooms; Entrees: Grilled Grape Leaves, filled with duck, Thai chili, palm sugar and cilantro root; Young Coconut Clay Pot, with chicken, lemongrass and kaffir lime leaf; Dessert: Chinese Donuts, served with Vietnamese coffee custard; and Papaya, in lime juice.
A film, not yet determined but most likely rated R, will be shown during the dinner.
