A South Philly find: Blue Corn in the Italian Market

Mexican restaurants pop up with regularity nowadays in the Italian Market.

Most are humble taquerias. Nothing wrong with that.

But a few weeks ago came a spot called Blue Corn (940 S. Ninth St., 215-925-1010), replacing the short-lived Torero Tapas Bar, which moved to Delaware County

With curved mirrors, decent glassware and flatware, high- and low-topped tables, it's date-night appropriate but certainly casual enough for the kids. Service is brisk and friendly.

This is a production of the Sandovar family - three brothers and a sister - many of whom worked in various capacities for Susanna Foo.

Though they're from Puebla, Amado Sandovar says they're aiming for high-end, Mexico City-quality food and alcoholic beverages. Yes, there's a full bar with sub-$8 mixed drinks. Take that, Center City.

The four chefs - Sandovar said at least two of them also work at high-end downtown restaurants - use blue corn everywhere - from the handmade tortillas to a richly dense, muffin-like blue corn cake and delicate blue corn cheesecake. 

It's open from10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday, 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.  Sunday.
