Watching the World Series game tonight?
The Halloween-scare stuff as Fox heads into commercial are clips from Terror Behind the Walls at Eastern State Penitentiary.
When World Series Game 3 ever starts, keep an eye out for a commercial for Stand Up to Cancer, which will feature Katie Couric, former Phillies first baseman John Kruk, actress Minka Kelly (yes, Derek Jeter's girlfriend), and Terrence Howard.
It's a “Priceless” spot featuring 20 seconds of baseball imagery followed by 10 seconds of the celebrities encouraging fans in Citizens Bank Park to Stand Up to Cancer.
It's due to air before the bottom of the second inning.
Bars have been packed for the World Series Games 1 and 2.
Now, it's a Saturday night -- Halloween -- and they'll be slammed.
Add to that mess: Tonight is the end of daylight saving time.
That means an hour's extra drinking time at Pennsylvania bars and restaurants.
Jerry Waters, head of licensing at the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, told me that when the clocks go back at 2 a.m. -- the normal closing time for most -- the booze may continue to flow.
At 2 a.m. standard time, that's it.
Be careful out there.
Singing the national anthem before the World Series Game 5 (Monday):
Alanis Morissette.
Not only does she have no Philly ties, she's Canadian.
Game 3's singer (Saturday) will be the cast of "Glee." As of 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Game 4's singer was still TBA.
Everyone wants to get into the act.
Ever since the remix of "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now" back in 1980, fans have been creating Phillies songs.
Here are four I've found. One is from the last time the Phillies and Yankees played in the World Series.
Fightin' Phils is by Richie Rosati.
"Parading Down Broad Street," produced by Stu Green.
"Unstoppable" by Guerrilladelphia, featuring G. Love.
"The Fightin' Phils Polka" is by the Delaware County String Band (1950). Lyrics here.
Two tables' worth of cast members of the Fox show Glee visited the Continental Mid-town on Friday night for dinner.
Glee is in town to sing the national anthem at Game 3 of the World Series on Saturday night.
Cast member Cory Monteith got on Twitter and typed: "Teriffic dinner at The Continental-Midtown in Philly! Thanks to Steven Starr for hookin' us up."
It was dinner for three at Barclay Prime on Rittenhouse Square on Friday night for Yankees shortshop Derek Jeter and his girlfriend, actress Minka Kelly. Catcher Jorge Posada tagged along, and was the third wheel, says my source, a patron at the steakhouse.
The three ate heartily on kobe filet, lobster bisque, truffle mac and cheese, and scallops wrapped in bacon. Part of Barclay Prime's shtick is the selection of knives for patrons. Jeter used a Chroma knife designed by Porsche, while Posada went more downscale with a Henckels model..
Jeter picked up the tab and tipped 35 percent.
Kelly will appear on live TV during Saturday's game as part of a MasterCard tie-in to the Stand Up to Cancer campaign.
Barclay Prime was an autograph seeker's paradise -- for both teams. While Jeter, Kelly, and Posada had dinner in one part of the dining room, Phillies pitchers Cliff Lee and Joe Blanton were heading small parties at nearby tables. (No interaction.) Eagles safety Quintin Mikell and QB Kevin Kolb were at separate tables, as well.
Looks like the Yankees are carnivores. Most of the team ended up at the Prime Rib in the Warwick, while Alex Rodriguez -- rolling stag -- had dinner with siblings at Davio's at 17th and Chestnut, where Andy Pettitte and wife Laura had a quiet corner and Reggie Jackson, Mr. October himself, was in for scallops and chardonnay.
A bit of prose making the rounds...
ObviousLEE we don't have to CHASE the pennant any MOYER but we still have to figure out HOWARD going to bring another one home. We have to keep ROLLINS up the STAIRS because its WERTH yelling with our hands in the EYRE and hanging off the LIDGE because it will all end in a VICTORINO in 2009. If they follow the MANUEL, the PHILLIES fans will be FELIZ and we will RAUUUL..... Go PHILLIES!
So many puns, you may need a Cairo-practor.
What to make of this?
Comparing viewership between Games 1 and 2 of the World Series, the numbers were up nationally.
Fox is crowing that 18.9 million viewers tuned in last night -- a spike over Game 1's audience of 17.7 million viewers.
But locally, more people watched Game 1 -- when Cliff Lee was toying with the Yankees lineup -- than Game 2 -- when A.J. Burnett was shutting down the Phils' hitters.
Locally, Game 1's Phillies win notched a 44.5 household rating and a 59.3 share, which translates to about 1,312,848 homes, while Game 2's loss drew a 42.5 HH/57, which translates to about 1.265 million homes.
Too painful to watch?
Last night's game nationally was the most-watched since Game 2 of the 2004 series between the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals.
Friday morning, Fox29 closed the 300 block of Market Street for a rally. I hear that the Good Day show had asked their counterparts at Fox5 in New York to come on the air for a little light trash-talk, and got the cold shoulder. The New York Foxers refused to participate.
Breakfast or brunch around 17th and the Parkway ... ?
Con Murphy's, an Irish pub now open in the odd-shaped space at the Windsor that was the old Peacock on the Parkway, is serving the rooms upstairs, so owners Maurice Collins and Liam Kelly decided to serve the public from morning till late night, as well.
Starting this weekend (10/31), Con Murphy's is serving brunch from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Menu is here.
Design and concept focus on Irish heritage, and the bilevel space includes a floor-to-ceiling mural of Irish sports, music, and culture. They're offering 12 beers on tap, plus a large selection of imported bottles and scotches. Collins and Kelly founded the nearby Tir na Nog.
Here's the all-day menu from chef Todd Butler. It's moderately priced and served from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. weekdays, 2 to 11 p.m. weekends. There's also a late-night bar menu (till 1 a.m.) for later in the week here.
Next week (11/5), breakfast (menu here) comes on line from 6:30 to 10 a.m. weekdays and 7 to 10 a.m. weekends.
