In the middle of Wednesday’s Pearl Jam show at the Spectrum, singer Eddie Vedder called out: “I wonder what the score is.”
On cue, a boxing-style ring-card girl bopped onto the stage with a giant scorecard reading, “Phillies 1, Yankees 0.” She kept the crowd updated through the game/show.
Vedder dedicated “Wishlist” to his “close personal friend, Raul Ibanez,” “Given to Fly” to Shane Victorino, and “Save You” to Brad Lidge.
The band will compete with the Phillies again Saturday when they play the final show ever at the Spectrum.
Quinnipiac University, usually known for political surveys, took the time to poll New Jerseyans on their preferred team in the World Series.
Quinnipiac discloses that New Jerseyans favor the Yankees by a 58 - 28 percent margin -- except in the South Jersey Philadelphia suburbs, where the Phillies lead 80 - 10 percent.
Shocker.
Back in 1950, the last time the Phils were in the Series with the Yankees, the Delaware County String Band cut a tune called "The Fightin' Phils Polka."
Give a listen here, courtesy of the Polish American Cultural Center.
Lyrics, should you want to sing along at home (a-one anna two anna...):
The Fight, Fight, Fight-in Phils! It's a tough, tough, team to beat.
They're out to win, win ev-'ry day. Every victory is sweet.
Watch em hit that ball a mile; play a game that's packed with thrills.
Get Pa to bring your Mother, Sister and your Brother
Come out to see the Fight-in' Phils. The fight, fight, fight-'in Phils.
("Fly, Eagles, Fly" it ain't.)
Con Murphy's, the Irish pub at 17th and the Parkway, opens Friday (10/30). More here.
The deal to bring a small-plater called Cicchetteria to 267 S. 19th St. has fallen through, chef Bill Murphy confirms. The restaurant is still operating as Di Vino Wine Bar. Murphy says he and partners are looking in New Hope.
Liquor-license issues... Poky contractors... The crop of fall restaurant openings may become a crop of winter openings, if the current delays continue. Here are a few tentatives:
Percy Street is looking at mid-November to start dispensing BBQ at Ninth and South Streets; see a neat video at www.percystreet.com.
Avenida, the Latin in Mount Airy, is still waiting for a liquor license; figure it'll open two weeks after the paperwork arrives.
Zama, the Japanese at 128 S. 19th St., is aiming for the end of November.
Sampan, Michael Schulson's Asian concept at 122 S. 13th St., targets Dec. 1.
Zavino, the pizza and wine bar at 13th and Sansom Streets, is delayed pending licensing/construction issues.
Parties always surround major sports events, and the swankiest World Series shindig will be the Phillies party Friday night at the Comcast Center.
An enormous tent was erected Wednesday on the plaza at 17th Street and JFK Boulevard.
This one is private, and the Phillies are not talking.
My sources say security will be tight as hundreds of people gather for cocktails and food on the plaza, in the lobby beneath the signature video wall, and in the subterranean marketplace.
The guest list includes bigwigs from Major League Baseball, the front-office staffs, and sponsors -- but not the players.
Nielsen's overnights are in, and as you'd expect, Fox29 dominated the evening's ratings with Game 1 of the World Series.
The telecast averaged a 44.5 rating and a 59.3 share, which translates to about 1,312,848 homes in the Philadelphia market.
Nationally, Fox pulled 17.7 million viewers.
Friday morning, Fox29 will close the 300 block of Market Street for a Phillies-related street fair from 7 to 10 a.m. during its Good Day show.
The space at 25th and Aspen Streets that was Aspen is coming back after a year-plus layoff.
Owner Jud Bertolf has picked a new name, after one of his favorite trivia questions: "What is the name of the bar in the Rocky movies?"
That would be Lucky 7.
Unlike Aspen's global focus, Lucky 7 Tavern will carry an American tavern menu ("I hate the word gastropub") from chef Sean Pashley, whose past includes Eulogy and a stint on the reality show Average Joe 2.
Opening date is not yet known, but it should be within a month.
#hat tip to Suzanne at Beerlass, who noticed activity in the space the other day.
Aramark, concessionaire at Citizens Bank Park, did an online poll to ask fans about their favorite food served in Ashburn Alley.
With 1,300 votes cast, Chickie’s & Pete’s Crab Fries were ranked tops, but an Aramark spokesman cautioned that the polling was tight among the others: Bull’s BBQ ribs, Campo’s cheesesteaks, Planet Hoagie’s sandwiches, Seasons Pizza’s slices, the Schmitter sandwich, and Tony Luke’s roast pork sandwich.
Numbers were not divulged, and the prize is only bragging rights.
Aramark separately polled the ballgirls, who preferred Bull’s BBQ and the Schmitter. The Phillie Phanatic supposedly was unable to choose just one item.
Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz is out with a “Señor Octubre” T-shirt, and it's being sold with a cut of proceeds going to Variety, the nonprofit that provides opportunities to children with disabilities throughout greater Philadelphia.
The shirt can be purchased online at ruiz51.com for $18.99 or at any Acme for $16.99.
Pete Rose, who sat in at 97.5 The Fanatic on Tuesday, will return from noon to 2 p.m. Friday (10/30) with Dan Schwartzman.
Rose will be patched in from Vegas, where the line on the Series is ...
Oh, never mind.
