Dig this: A bar called 6 Feet Under coming to Washington Square

So a lively establishment. Great place to grab a cold one.

Gene LeFevre, who's been behind a number of restaurants, retail and other hospitality projects over the years (Morris House Hotel, Black Sheep, Mellon Independence Center), has a serious undertaking on Washington Square.

He's installing a tavern at 727 Walnut St., the subterranean space that was the noted Italian restaurant Gaetanos decades ago. Most recently, it was an Asian restaurant called Umai.

His working name is Six Feet Under.

Why? "We own the building, and we're told we'd never be able to rent our place because patrons would have to walk down six feet," LeFevre told me. (Well also, "12 Steps Down" was taken.)

His crew from the nearby M Restaurant at the Morris is setting it up as a tavern with an eye to feed the folks around Washington Square - "a cross between the old Friday Saturday Sunday and the Black Sheep. That's the goal anyway, because the area is underserved."

Great place to grab a cold one.

He's aiming at an October opening.
