The 2013 James Beard nominations were announced March 18 from Charleston, S.C., winnowing down a large list of semifinalists announced last month.

The 2013 James Beard nominations were announced March 18 from Charleston, S.C., winnowing down a large list of semifinalists announced last month.

The chef/restaurant awards will be handed out the evening of May 6 in New York.

Not much of a showing for Philly folks.

The lone Philly-area finalist for Best Chef/Mid-Atlantic is Brad Spence of Amis

Vetri is a nominee for service

Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in Delaware is a nominee for wine, beer and spirits professional

Media awards will be handed out May 3.

Locally connected journalism nominees: Joy Manning, formerly of Table Matters (personal essay), and Aliza Green (for health and well-being).

In broadcast: NewsWorks of WHYY was nominated for radio show. WHYY was nominated for its Art of Food TV shows.

In books: American Cooking: Fire in My Belly, cowritten by David Joachim of Centre Valley and Canal House Cooks Everyday by Melissa Hamilton and Christopher Hirsheimer of Lawrenceville, N.J.
