The BYOB 943 shuts down

POSTED: Friday, February 15, 2013, 5:43 PM
943 BYOB at 943 S. Ninth St. MICHAEL KLEIN / Philly.com

Critics may have loved Pascual "Pat" Cancelliere's Italian/Argentine BYOB at 943 S. Ninth St. in the Italian Market, but critics don't pay the bills.

And so, Cancelliere tells me that Wednesday, Feb. 13 was his last day after two years. Cancelliere spent the better part of two years building the restaurant, and even for a time toyed with the idea of obtaining a liquor license.

Cancelliere, who had open-heart surgery last summer, said he'd take time off and get a job.

I don't know what experience others have had. I had 3 very good meals there. But last month, with a reservation, I arrived to find it closed; no call, no sign. When we finally contacted some a few days later, no apology.

A nice restaurant closes and a white castle is rumored to open on ninth street. Change you could be proud of...I guess???

The place has been closed for longer than that. Ate there once, food was decent, service was pleasant but poorly trained - and the Chef/owner found it more important to be hanging talking w/ friends than getting the food out in a timely fashion. Bad businessman.

Learn how to cook and eat at home. When you go out on the town go to Center City or the Burbs. The Italian market is the filthiest area in Philly.
