Loss of Mathis and Herremans should concern Sam Bradford

Has anyone asked Sam Bradford what he thinks of Chip Kelly's offensive line moves?

I wonder what the Eagles' newly acquired quarterback (with a left knee that's been surgically repaired twice) thinks about Chip's decision to abruptly cut Pro Bowl guard Evan Mathis last week.

I think Sam might be curious why Chip would cut Mathis, considering he let go fellow starter Todd Herremans in February and hasn't drafted a single offensive lineman in two seasons. In fact, the Eagles are the only team in the entire league that hasn't selected an offensive lineman during the past two drafts.

Does Sam worry that Jason Peters, still the stud of the group, is among the oldest starting offensive tackles in the league and is coming off two Achilles surgeries? Did he watch the last four games of the season, where Peters allowed four sacks against the Cowboys and Giants? I hope not.

Maybe Sam is calmed by Peters' insistence that the Eagles have a better offensive line than the Cowboys. "Don't get me wrong, they're a good, solid offensive line. But guy for guy, they can't touch us," Peters said, ignoring the fact that Allen Barbre (pronounced "Barber") and Matt Tobin are projected as starters with little depth behind them.

I'm not sure if Sam even knows Barbre is a 31-year-old journeyman who not only will be among the oldest starting guards in the league, but also lacks experience and is coming off a serious injury.

Something Sam should definitely worry about is what would happen to his protection if any one of the 30-year-old starters on the offensive line (most were injured at some point last season) go down in 2015. Behind them is a depth chart as empty and void as the Grand Canyon. Andrew Gardner? David Molk? Dennis Kelly? Cole Manhart? Not exactly the future offensive linemen Eagles fans would hope for.

Cheer up, Sam. At least the Eagles just signed Jared Wheeler to a one-year deal. Sure, he was on three different teams last season and never managed to make it onto the field. But he's a heck of a guy and is probably the locker room personality Chip likes.

Take a deep breath, Sam, and remember: Scheme, it's all about the scheme.
