Sigh… so, so close.

When Clint Dempsey scored just before the 81st minute to give the United States a 2-1 lead over Portugal, I thought he was handing in Team USA’s ticket out of the “Group of Death.”

Unfortunately, Cristiano Ronaldo managed to evade Donald Duck and Miss. BumBum to delver a perfect cross to Silvestre Varela, who delivered the equalizer with just under 1:00 remaining.

I still can’t believe it happened. Going in, I think every realistic soccer fan would have been happy leaving Arena Amazonia with a tie versus Portugal, setting up a finale next Thursday where simply tying Germany would advance the United States.

But not like this.

So thanks to Team USA, the entire country now knows what it feels like to be a Philadelphia sports fan. Go drown your sorrows in a cheesesteak, and I'll see you on Thursday.
