Villanova guards Maalik Wayns and Dominic Cheek began Thursday night's game against South Florida on the bench because of what a team spokesman called a "minor issue" at practice.

The spokesman said the two guards were expected to play.

Wayns, a junior from Roman Catholic High, is the Wildcats' top scorer with a 17.2-point average but has struggled with his outside shot all season. Cheek, also a junior, is the team's third-leading scorer at 11.7 points per game but, like Wayns, is shooting less than 30 percent from three-point range.

Serious questions about Wright's ability to recruit and coach. This is the third year in a row that he has failed to live up to expectations, only this year it started early. No seniors, weak junior class, Bell is the only soph and not very good, Frosh class is mediocre at best. Two highly recruited players next year that will not meet expectations. So now we are at the bottom of the BE.I see maybe two wins rest of year.Nova sports would be better served in the Patriot League.

About Joe Juliano
Joe Juliano first visited the Palestra in 1970 after entering Temple University and became hooked for life on Big Five basketball. He'll always go with that name, figuring if the Big Ten can have 12 teams, why can't the Big Five have six?

Juliano joined the Inquirer in 1985 after 10 years at United Press International and has covered college sports for most of that time. His current beats are Villanova basketball, Penn State football, golf and the Penn Relays.
