Fashion's influence on the 13 hottest baby names of 2013
Esther Lee, Philly.com
Nameberry statistics released its 13 hottest names of the first quarter of the year, as opposed to the same time frame last year. The findings included an interesting array of odd names, largely influenced by pop culture and surprisingly, fashion. In the slideshow above, we share four names influenced by fashion in some form.
Marnie
The name had its moment in the '60s thanks to the Hitchcock film. However, the hype over Allison Williams, actress and daughter of the reputable Brian Williams, has exploded in the last year. The star, dubbed fashion's new "It" girl, has walked across every major red carpet this season. She's also signed a big beauty contract, covered Town & Country, and is practically an unofficial spokeswoman for type A, twenty-somethings everywhere. Williams owes her popularity to her prim character, Marnie, on HBO's hit series, Girls.
Christian
This one's a little uncomfortable. Although Christian has always maintained a level of popularity with newborn boys, Today reports the name has tripled in the first quarter of 2013 compared to last year. Why? Largely due to the insane popularity of "Fifty Shades of Grey" hero Christian Grey. Also, if we were to factor in fashion - The name also gained some favoritism with the rise of fashion's finest "Christian's" including Louboutin, Dior and Lacroix.
Mingus
Leave it to the super to pique interest in a name like, "Mingus."
Model Helena Christensen named her child after jazz legend Charles Mingus, and has increasingly been spotted publicly with her 13-year-old son in the last year. The name has seen a 150 percent increase in the first quarter of this year.
Marlowe/Marlow
We like to think Phoebe Philo, creative director of Celine and genius behind this coveted luggage tote, played a role in catapulting interest in this name after she dubbed her son, "Marlow." However, it's Philo and a handful of celebrities who have named their children Marlow(e), including the stylish Sienna Miller, whose baby girl with Tom Sturridge goes by that adorable name.
The 9 remaining hottest baby names:
- Nelly - Thanks to the Kardashians, "Nelly" as in Nelly Disick is a hot name.
- Mavis
- Thor - Really? The name made popular by the comic book character portrayed by Chris Hemsworth in Thor and 2012 blockbuster hit, The Avengers, has seen a 200 percent spike in the first three months of 2013. "Thor," by the way, means "Thunder."
- Severine - Bond girls have clout.
- Bruce - Springsteen, Willis, you know
- Wilder
- Phaedra - Reality TV's housewife of Atlanta brought this name back to life.
- Linnea
- Finnegan - which by the way, is such a cute name.

MS. LOU. - These are names white people would find trendy that I find racist, just like Michelle Obama. BOOKKA
Does that Allison Williams ever show her @@ on that SHOW ? FairmountFrank
More clueless sheep who don't have the basic intelligence to even know how to name their child. Jim Wintersteen- I beg your pardon, smarty pants. These names are unique and that is what I like. It stinks to be in a classroom where like FIVE other mopes share your first name.
MS. LOU.
I understand that everyone names their kids after something, but pop culture seems a particularly trashy source. cloudkitt
Maybe Dweezil and Moon Unit Zappa would like to chime in here. Paulo
Phaedra I like only because it reminds me of old school amphetamine diet doctors. MS. LOU.
