Plan ahead
"Book your trial at least two to four weeks before your wedding day."
- Isaac Herder, hairstylist, Lotus Salon
"Hire a professional to do your hair and makeup and plan your trials in advance. Come prepared with a lot of photos of what you want so you can make sure you and your stylist share the same vision."
- Franc Margri hairstylist, Giovanni & Pileggi Salon
"Don't make the mistake of leaving your bridal makeup trials to the last minute, after all you want your face to be as perfect as your gown. Start your trials as much as 12 months, and at least 3 months, before your wedding day. Then be prepared to meet again in the weeks leading up to the wedding to do a run-through."
- Victoria Roggio, resident makeup artist at the Rescue Spa and owner of Make Me Up Pretty
Be yourself (but with false lashes)
"LESS IS MORE!! A bride should never overdo it with her hair and makeup, especially her hair, headpiece, jewelry in her hair and veil. Your dress should be your main attraction, so try to go soft & simple with your hair."
- Marisa Campagna, hairstylist & owner of Flawless Finish Artistry
"I always tell my brides that the makeup for the day should be similar to the way you normally look but a bit enhanced. If you normally wear a neutral color lip, don't opt for a bold color. False eyelashes are a must, whether it's individual or a strip, they'll make your eyes stand out."
- Terese Ronan, makeup artist, Facial Creations by Terese
"Your wedding day isn't the time to experiment with red lipstick or smoky eyes for the first time. Choose tones that you feel comfortable with and most like yourself. In case you are the girl who loves makeup, go for it and play as much as you like with your bridal makeup. Do wear false lashes. If you want something more natural, buy the individual lashes and just put a few on the outer corners. Lashes will make your eyes pop in pictures.
- Victoria Roggio, resident makeup artist at the Rescue Spa and owner of Make Me Up Pretty
Prep
"Great skin is a must for brides, so I always tell my brides to drink plenty of water for a month straight before the wedding and hydrate with a nice moisturizer to have that blushing bride glow on their wedding day."
- Keila Cruz, makeup artist
"Get cuts regularly leading up to the wedding, it will have a nicer curl however, and DO NOT get it cut the week of the wedding!"
- Jaimie Sutton, makeup artist, Sutton Artistry
"Don't shampoo the morning of unless you have fine hair, because it will be harder to style."
- Franc Margri hairstylist at Giovanni & Pileggi Salon
Vintage is a do
"Vintage, vintage, vintage and more vintage! Soft waves or sleek ponytails; whether they be high or low."
- Isaac Herder, hairstylist, Lotus Salon
"Smokey eye [dramatic eye and nude lip] - it's a classic bridal look that is very popular. I love this look since it looks great on camera. I am definitely an artist and love playing with eyes. They are my favorite feature. A bold lip and nude eye is Old Hollywood Glamour."
- Victoria Roggio, resident makeup artist at the Rescue Spa and owner of Make Me Up Pretty
"Whether you are a bride, bridesmaid, or guest, bridal beauty trends for 2015 are classic and super-chic — classic updo's, messy and sleek buns, chic braided styles, romantic, voluminous curls and elegant low ponytails."
- Wadiya Adger, hairstylist, Face Beauty Boutique
Products matter
"Luminous Silk Foundation by Giorgio Armani is a lightweight formula that blends beautifully into the skin using a Beauty Blender and Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray. It helps your makeup last throughout the entire day."
- Victoria Roggio, resident makeup artist at the Rescue Spa and owner of Make Me Up Pretty
"Must-have products are aerosol hairspray — my favorite is Shaper from Sebastian — and a lightweight shine product. My favorite is Sebastian's Shine & Define."
- Franc Margri hairstylist at Giovanni & Pileggi Salon
Wadiya Adger's, (Face Boutique) must have hair products:
"Some of my favorite bride lips are Viva Glam V lipstick and gloss or Viva Glam VI lipstick and gloss. These are two lips you could never go wrong with, especially for brides. The V is a beautiful, soft, nudish color and VI is a brownish-pink but still soft."
- Keila Cruz, makeup artist
While the advice and recommendations vary, makeup artists are in agreement when it comes to pinching pennies on wedding day makeup. Makeup artist Jayme Arrasmith warns, "I've met countless women who spend thousands on their dresses, venue, flowers hair, shoes etc. and gasp at the idea of paying their makeup artist and decide to go the cheap route. Why put out all the effort for everything BUT your face?"
