Temple Women's Soccer Battles St. Bonaventure to Scoreless Draw on Senior Day

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Owls wrapped up their 2011 season on Sunday afternoon by going the distance, taking St. Bonaventure down to the wire in a scoreless overtime match. Due to inclement weather that fell in the Philadelphia area on Saturday, leaving the Ambler Sports Complex with unplayable conditions, the match was played at La Salle's McCarthy Stadium. Prior to the match, the Temple University Athletic Department honored Temple's five senior players for their four years of comitment to the women's soccer program. Among the honorees were seniors Amanda VogelmanBecky BentleySamantha FarlowTiia Kuokka and Niki Conn.

The shutout effort put up by the Owls marked the fifth time this season that they held an opponent scoreless. Five shutouts in one season is the most pitched by a Temple women's soccer team since 1995. Redshirt junior Tara Murphy recorded all five clean sheets for Temple this season. Against the Bonnies, Murphy made seven rejections in goal, which was just one short of her counterpart St. Bonaventure's Megan Junker

In the first half, junior Brittany Wollner had Temple and everyone in attendance believing she had the Owls on the board when her shot  from 40 yards out bounced behind the St. Bonaventure keeper, but somehow Junker managed to catch up to the ball before it crossed the line for the go-ahead goal.

In her final day donning the Cherry and White, senior Niki Conn had a handful of chances to win the game for the Owls in the final minutes of regulation. Conn blasted two shots on net, but Junker made a strong effort to keep the game at a scoreless deadlock.

Conn ripped a season-high 10 shots in the game. For the game, the Bonnies outshot the Owls, 21-17.

Temple concluides its first year under head coach Matt Gwilliam and his staff with a 5-12-1 overall record. Under Gwilliam the Owls improved their league record from a season ago, finishing 2-6-1 with five points.
