PHILADELPHIA - Junior Missy Schwetizer notched a hat trick to lead Temple lacrosse to a 13-9 win against city rival La Salle in the final regular season game for both teams. The Owls had already clinched a berth in next weekend's Atlantic 10 Championships, which will be hosted by Temple at Geasey Field on Friday, April 29, and Sunday, May 1.
Temple will likely be the third seed of the four teams, but final pairings and game times will not be released until Monday, following the conclusion of all regular-season contests.
After La Salle struck first only a minute and a half into the game, the Owls answered back with four straight goals. Cohen scored the third and assisted on the fourth as Temple earned its largest lead of the half with 20 minutes remaining.
La Salle's Lauren McDermott, who had scored the opening goal of the game, scored twice more in a 3-0 run that tied the game at 4-4 with 10:30 left in the first half.
In the final five minutes, Stephanie Markunas scored to put Temple back in the lead, as did Stephany Parcell off an assist from Schweitzer as the Owls took a 6-4 lead into halftime.
Those back-to-back goals would prove to be the start of a 6-0 Temple run, as the Owls exploded with four goals to start the second half, two of which were scored by Schweitzer. But even the 10-4 lead was not safe, as the Explorers began to rally.
La Salle used its own 4-0 run to pull within two, 10-8, with close to six minutes remaining in the game. Charlotte Swavola scored her second goal of the game to stop the run, and after one more La Salle goal, Temple freshman Jaymie Tabor scored the final two goals of the game to seal the victory.
The teams finished with 21 shots apiece. Temple goalkeeper Tess Bishop made five saves, and sophomore Meghan Clothier came in for the final 14 minutes and recorded one save.
