PHILADELPHIA - Senior Mo Hawkins scored 2:18 into overtime to lift the Saint Joseph's women's soccer team past Rhode Island, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Sweeney Field.

PHILADELPHIA - Senior Mo Hawkins scored 2:18 into overtime to lift the Saint Joseph's women's soccer team past Rhode Island, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Sweeney Field.

Fighting back from down one with under five minutes to play, the Hawks tied the game late on a goal by Emily Gingrich, leading to Hawkins' game winner.

Saint Joseph's (6-6-3, 2-2-1 Atlantic 10)pushed the ball into the middle of the Rhode Island zone, where Shannon Farrell found teammate Shannon Westhead streaking down the left wing. Taking the pass, Westhead centered a pass into the Rhode Island box where Hawkins headed it in past the goalkeeper's hands at 92:18 to give SJU the 2-1 win.

Trailing 1-0 entering the final five minutes of play, the Hawks' Gingrich tallied the equalizer at 86:48. With the ball at the top right of the Rams' box, Gingrich lofted a shot to the left side of the goal and past the Rhode Island goalkeeper to tie the game at 1-1.

Rhode Island (5-11-0, 0-6-0 A-10) broke the scoreless tie in the 68th minute off a corner kick. Samantha Leyh headed in the Rams' goalas Alex Stanton's corner kick was headed back to Leyh from Donika Murray.

For the game, Rhode Island outshot the Hawks 16-13, with SJU senior goalkeeper Lauren Jancuska making a game-high three saves to earn the victory.

Saint Joseph's returns to action next Sunday at St. Bonaventure at 1 p.m.
