Saint Joseph's Women's Soccer Drops Heart Breaking Double Overtime Contests To La Salle, 1-0

PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team dropped a heart-breaking double overtime contest to La Salle, 1-0, Friday evening at Finnesey Field. The Hawks' senior goalkeeper Christine Neal set the SJU all-time record for career saves (292) in a game-high seven save effort.

PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team dropped a heart-breaking double overtime contest to La Salle, 1-0, Friday evening at Finnesey Field. The Hawks' senior goalkeeper Christine Neal set the SJU all-time record for career saves (292) in a game-high seven save effort.

In a thrilling match in which Saint Joseph's defense played stellar through out, both squads had prime scoring chances, but could not convert.

In the 79th minute, the Explorers' Courtney Niemiec drilled a shot at the SJU net, only to have Neal make the save. In keeping the score tied, Neal passed Colleen Corcoran's career mark for saves, snaring the 291st of her career.

With the score knotted at 0-0 after regulation, the Hawks' sophomore Jill Root gave he team it's best chance. With the ball 30 yards out of the box down the left side of La Salle's zone, Root drilled a shot that clanked off the corner of the right goal, nearly missing the game winner.

Unfortunately for SJU (8-6-4, 3-2-3 Atlantic 10) in the second extra frame, La Salle's Marayam Huseini's shot to the upper left corner from the top of the box found the back of the net at 103:26 to give La Salle the win.

For the game, the Explorers (14-4-0, 8-0-0 A-10) out shot the Hawks 21-8 and held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Root and senior Ali Yozwiak each collected a shot on net for Saint Joseph's.

The Hawks cap the regular season this Sunday when they host Fordham at 1 p.m. Saint Joseph's will honor its three seniors prior to the match.
