Saint Joseph's Women's Soccer Blanks Rhode Island, 2-0

PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team got goals from freshman Olivia McEachern and sophomore McHale Perkins and senior goalkeeper Christine Neal made six saves as the Hawks blanked Rhode Island, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Finnesey Field.

Saint Joseph's (8-5-2, 3-1-1 Atlantic 10) opened the scoring in the 35th minute on McEachern's first collegiate goal. Junior midfielder Mo Hawkins sent a perfectly timed pass up the middle of the Rhode Island zone, allowing McEachern an opportunity for a breakaway. The Hawks' rookie drilled a shot low past the Rhode Island kicker at 34:13 to give her team the lead.

Leading 1-0 with less than 10 minutes to go, Perkins added an insurance goal in the 81st minute to help seal the victory. Off a corner kick, the ball bounced to sophomore Kersten Formento, who got the ball to Perkins on the left side of the box, allowing the SJU defender to deposit the ball into the back of the open net for her second goal of the season at 80:36.

Neal would do the rest from there to preserve the shutout, making a pair of saves in the final three minutes to earn her eighth win of the year and fifth shutout.

For the game, both teams collected three corner kicks, while the Rams out shot SJU, 10-7.

The Hawks return to action this Friday at Saint Louis at 8 p.m.
