Drexel Field Hockey Scores Two in Second-Half to Defeat JMU, 2-1

Philadelphia - The Drexel field hockey team scored two second-half goals to edge James Madison, 2-1, at Buckley Field in its first Colonial Athletic Association game of the season. Sophomore Christina Conrad scored the game-winning goal with just under seven minutes remaining in the second half. Drexel outshot the Dukes, 11-7, and drew 12 penalty corners to James Madison's five. The win improved the Dragons to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

The Dukes were able to put points on the board first after their second-straight corner attempt. At 9:13 in the first half, James Madison's Saskia Chelmowski shot the ball from the top of the circle just under Jantien Gunter's blockers into the left side of the cage.

With 15 minutes remaining in the first, the Dukes had a two-on-one opportunity heading down the field. Gunter broke-up the pass coming across the circle and cleared the ball away to hold the Dragons to a one-goal deficit. In the final 30 seconds of the half, senior midfielder Amanda Fleischut snapped a quick shot from outside the circle on cage, but the ball was deflected away by James Madison's defender. The Dukes were up by one at halftime, 1-0. Both teams shared four shots.

After 50 minutes of scoreless play, senior midfielder Amanda Fleischut  carried the ball around two defenders before chipping it over the left shoulder of James Madison's goalkeeper Lena Wimmert to tie the game, 1-1, off of a penalty corner.

Four minutes later, the Dragons recorded two more penalty corners. Fleischut passed the ball behind her to teammate Christina Conrad who blasted a shot into the back of the cage for her second game-winning goal of the season. The Dragons were able to hold off James Madison in the following six minutes of play for the win.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jantien Gunter made three stops combining for 36 total saves. Opposing goalkeeper Lena Wimmert had five saves.

The Dragons host Virginia Commonwealth in a non-conference game on Sunday, September 23 at noon on Drexel's home turf at Buckley Field. The team is now 3-0 at home.
