Norfolk, Va. – Old Dominion edged Drexel, 9-8, in a tightly contested women's lacrosse game. The Dragons (8-4) outshot the Lady Monarchs (3-9, 2-1) 20-14 and finished with 41 fouls to Old Dominion's 7. Drexel is now 2-1 in conference play.
Junior Charlotte Wood led the Dragons for the second straight game with three goals. Wood now has 36 goals on the season. Sophomores Alyse Maiden and Kelli Joran also scored a pair of goals for Drexel.
Kelli Joran scored in the opening seconds of the game to give the Dragons an early lead. Less than a minute later, Old Dominion went on a three-goal run and put the Lady Monarchs ahead, 3-1. After a continuous rally, Maiden tied up the game, 4-4, with an unassisted goal. Old Dominion answered back with two goals and led by two, 6-4, at the end of the first half.
Old Dominion opened up the second half with two straight goals. Maiden scored at 4:41 drawing the game within two goals, 9-7, but the Lady Monarchs held on to the lead until time expired.
Senior goalkeeper Whitney Johnson tallied two stops. Johnson now has 61 saves on the season. Drexel's Amanda Norcini led the team in caused turnovers.
The women's lacrosse team returns to action on Sunday, April 17 at 1:00 p.m. at William and Mary.
